La Sala Alcalá 31 presents the exhibition “Big Sur: Chilean contemporary art in Engel Collection” , an important selection of one of the largest private collections in Latin America, Claudio Engel collection.
Curated by Christian Viveros-Fauné, “Gran Sur”, presents for the first time in Spain such an important exhibition of works by Chilean artists from the late twentieth and early twenty-first. The exhibition not only represents the most comprehensive introduction to Chilean art that has been produced in recent decades, but also articulates a different vision of the extraordinary creativity exhibited by several generations of Chilean artists both inside and outside the country.
The exhibition brings together different artistic manifestations, such as painting, sculpture, photography, installations, videoprojections, textile work and graphic work, as well as hybrid projects and multidisciplinary presentations, and includes eighty-nine works by thirty-seven great artists. Among them, fundamental figures in the Chilean artistic context such as EVERY, Juan Downey, Alfredo Jaar and Paz Errázuriz, going through a second generation of artists, including Patrick Hamilton, Fernando Prats or Magdalena Correa, until arriving at the present, in which Emerging artists such as Pilar Quinteros, Enrique Ramírez or Rodrigo Valenzuela have a great international projection.
A selection of works that show a strong commitment to both formal experimentation and the main themes of our time, showing one of the most characteristic features of Chilean art: an eccentric and privileged alterity.
