Work on paper by Melanie Daniel from 2016

The concept of the nomadic exhibition Evocations was born under the overwhelming weight of the recent and present cultural, ethical, social and political crises, the pandemic and the general sense of uncertainty, but its intellectual roots go  back further: to the position of artistic discourse seeking answers to the cultural challenges of the millennium. In the face of superficial hedonism, spectacular theatricality and empty material fetishism, many artists are seeking deeper, more complex, sensitive and empathetic responses to the conflictual realities of the time, that convey the precariousness of our existence, the pervasive sense of fragility and vulnerability, the perspective of human integrity at risk, the overwhelming presence of manipulation and violence in all aspects of life.

It is an art that seeks out the intellectual reserves and emotional energies that can illuminate new perspectives, new realms of sensitivity and empathy. Intimacy, emotional intensity and radical imagination are embodied in these works. The personality, immediacy, sensitivity and fragility of the drawing, in which intellectual thought meets extreme dynamism of imagination, and in which the pictorial narrative appears naturally, with a spontaneity that is self-evident, is the expression par excellence of the spirit of the age that understood and represented the problematic reality of the times. The world expressed in the drawing is intensely personal, intimate, emotionally and psychically charged, and is most reminiscent of the spontaneity of direct speech and gesticulation.

The exhibition at the Faur Zsófi Gallery, Budapest, which is the first stage in a series of international exhibitions, features graphic works by 20 renowned international artists.
