Cheeky: Summer Butts

Reception for the artists: Friday, June 29, 2018
Marinaro is pleased to present Cheeky: Summer Butts, a group exhibition organized by Anthony Iacono and Peter LaBier.
Summer Butts embraces a range of contemporary representations of “the butt” in order to examine its central significance as an aesthetic, social, and political focal point in western art and beyond. The show asks how the butt is imbued with significance in a variety of cultural traditions and inquires what power relations are embedded in our interactions with the butt.
The artists included in this show approach the butt from a variety of angles, juxtaposing the campy, slapstick, and profane with the erotic and beautiful. In abstract and figurative treatments, they employ elements from fashion photography, pornography, cartoon imagery and celebrated work from the art historical canon.
This capacious conceptual framework and archive of influences situates the butt at the center of many points of connection: from classical Greco-Roman ideals of beauty to the abjection of scatological humor. The works in this show display and celebrate the butt in its full complexity: its taboos, contradictions, and mundane presence in the human experience.
The artists included in the exhibition include: Keith Boadwee, Caroline Wells Chandler, Mariano Chavez, Talia Chetrit, Omari Douglin, Ryan Flores, Jason Fox, Emily Furr, Nash Glynn, Maggie Goldstone, Kady Grant, Ilana Harris-Babou, Philip Hinge, Loie Hollowell, Ridley Howard, Pali Kashi, Pope.
