Rebecca Morgan has always been cheeky and dead serious and that is why we have always loved her works. She has been a staple in the Juxtapoz universe for the last decade. making appearences in Juxtapoz x Superflat at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Radio Juxtapoz podcast and our 25th anniversary black and white drawing show in Miami. What we find fascinating is her constant exploration of her own life, through the lens of feminism, desire, rural Americana, age, growth, humor, disgust and a directly self-referential wittiness. In the four years since her last solo show, the world has changed and so has Rebecca. Sure, she may call the show Over the Hill but she is anything but.
Central to the show is the autobiographical work (most of them are), Self-Portrait as Romanticized Painter. The work shows Rebecca with the backdrop of her new life in Hudson Valley, where she is now a teacher in the arts and examining not only her own art history but the art history of the area she now calls home. Again, there is both a sense of comedy and seriousness here, where she is clearly grappling with a series of life changes but with a sense of absurdity that is profound. So is life. —Evan Pricco
