Angelina Gualdoni incorporates overlapping pours and variegated color caused by heavy paint pushing through from the back of the canvas. Her abstracted still lifes and interiors surround the decorative and utilitarian items that build our everyday lives with a vibrating, malleable reality. Overlapping shapes and varied thickness of paint, combined with ghostly marks from the reverse of the painting, confuse our sense of direction. The subject becomes the complicated play between background and foreground, while fragmented geometric patterns add a meandering structure and reference wallpaper, textiles, and early-20th century women artists such as Sonia Delaunay and Barbara Stepanova.
Angelina Gualdoni received her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, and her MFA from the University of Illinois in Chicago. Her paintings have been the subject of solo and group shows nationally and internationally at the Crystal Flowers Art Salon, NY, Trestle Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, KS, Tufts University Galleries, Boston, MA, Queens Museum, NY, St. Louis Art Museum, MO, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL, The Aldrich Museum, Connecticut, the Museum de Paviljoens, Netherlands, and the Neuberger Museum, Purchase, NY. Her work resides in the Saatchi Collection, as well as the MCA, Chicago, and the Nerman Museum, Kansas City.
